Gaming Culture and it’s Stereotypes

Wednesday, March 31st, 2010

My trip to Digital Overload in Providence, RI has re-ignited my interest in LAN Gaming and gaming in general. The only problem with being a gamer today is that the general public always assumes that a gamer is someone who lives in their mother’s basement and never comes out to see the light of day. This could not be farther from the truth so I would like to set some things straight for the record.

Starting off with a 3 word something that any lame person assumes that a “gamer” has to play, World Of Warcraft. I cannot tell you how many times during my employment at a retail store as a computer technician that I had some customer ask me about World Of Warcraft just because I was into computers. I personally find it insulting and all it does is show how ignorant you are as a person. That would be like me going up to a black guy and asking him if he had any good chicken or watermelon lately, it’s just stupid and ignorant.

Now most people also assume that gamers spend the majority of their days in the basement. I myself have my gaming station in my bedroom that resides on the second floor. While it is true that gaming is better done in the dark it is not always done in a basement. There are gatherings called LAN parties that most gamers attend. A LAN party is is when gamers get together with their gaming systems (PC or Console) and hook them up to a Local Area Network (or LAN for short) to play games with each other. Now most people will probably argue that internet gaming is the same thing but the fact is that most of the people who say that have never attended a LAN party. What most gamers like about the LAN parties is that after they get done with a fragging session you can get up and go meet the guy that you have been head-shotting for the past hour. Usually with most LAN parties at some point everyone will go out to eat and its always a lot of fun.

From my personal experience with gaming and LAN parties I typically find that most gamers are pretty friendly and outgoing. There are a select few who like to keep to themselves but they are not the majority of the gamers that are out there. Before I went into retail I was quite active in the LAN party community and hosted parties almost every other month. But due to the crazy retail hours I was not able to host them. I am getting active again as I truly miss the environment and the people from the gaming community.

Trading Spaces Laptop Edition

Saturday, March 27th, 2010

As most of you know my mobile workstation/gaming machine for the past year and a half has been my beloved Toshiba Qosmio X305 laptop. Now I personally wouldn’t call it a laptop per se because it weighs in at around 12 pounds and is almost 3 inches at the thickest point when closed. It is a real beast and has every right to be seeing as Toshiba has crammed everything that a gamer could ever want into a laptop. However I am moving into a more professional period of my life and while the Qosmio X305 is a nice looking hot-rod of a laptop it is not professional looking. So seeing as my brother has had a Gateway P7807u that is very similarly equipped we decided to trade laptops (but we swapped our hard drives).

Today I have used the Gateway for about 8 hours and I am quite happy with the change. Not only is it slimmer than my Toshiba but the battery life is a bit better. The Qosmio got between 1 hour to 1.5 hours of battery life whereas the Gateway is getting between 2.5 and 3 hours. This is a big plus as I am not having to be tethered to the electrical outlet as much. The response time is a little better than the Qosmio but only because I setup a RAID 0 between my 2 500GB 7200RPM hard drives. The Qosmio had spots for dual hard drive but the BIOS had the RAID option disabled. The RAID 0 array nets about 200MB/s on the HD Speed benchmark.

As for what I don’t like about the Gateway there are only 3 things that I have a minor gripe about.

1. There is no integrated bluetooth radio. Now this model did not come with it but I am finding that I can BT for about $25.

2. The CTRL and the FN keys are reversed. This is a major problem right now because when trying to play a video game the CTRL key is commonly used to crouch down in game.

3. The speakers. Now as for laptops go the speakers are average but when compared to the Qosmio’s Harman/Kardon speaker setup it is vastly inferior.

One major plus is that I am able to easily upgrade the LCD panel to 1680×1050 or 1920×1200 for around $120. All in all I will be keeping the Gateway as my new mobile workstation.

Day 2 – Digital Overload Road Trip

Saturday, March 6th, 2010

On the second day of the road trip we visited Boston, MA. We arrived there at about noon and parked the car in a garage towards the center of the town. We walked around and then found the freedom trail. The freedom trail takes you around the city visiting all the key historical sites in the city. Between all the different buildings and the sights that Boston had I was a great day. I took tons of pictures and they turned out great. :)

After walking around for about 5 hours we decided to stop at Cheers Boston for some dinner and a drink. We got to sit at the original set bar from the show Cheers! I ordered their Norm Burger and was told that if I finished it my name would be on their website. The burger was crazy huge. There were two 3/4lb meat patties 3 onion rings and tons of other toppings along with 3 pieces of bread. It was hard but I was able to finish it. I also had a “Magic Hat #9″ beer. It was a light beer that was smooth with a sweet aftertaste.

After we left Boston we then headed to Salem, MA to see the site of the Salem Witch trials. Unfortunately most of the sights and museums were closed but we found a place to park real quick and walked around the graveyard where the witches are buried. It was cool but would have been better during the day.

We left Salem and met up with Will’s Uncle for some candle-pin bowling. It was alright but I couldn’t seem to get the technique down.

Day 1 (Part II) – Digital Overload Road Trip

Friday, March 5th, 2010

We spent the whole day in New York seeing the sights and taking plenty of pictures. We walked around the city and saw the Statue of Liberty, Empire State Building, Time Square, and Wall Street. We also went to the NBC building and got some souvenirs. We got some Pizza from a nice little pizza place for lunch and we checked out the Soho Apple store.

Overall New York was alright and Time Square was pretty lit up. But I really prefer Chicago over New York. Why? It’s less crowded and cleaner. New York is also much more expensive. I am glad that I went just to say that I did but I would probably not go back any time soon.

Day 1 – Digital Overload Road Trip

Thursday, March 4th, 2010

So began the road trip at 6:30pm on Wednesday March 3rd, 2010. I packed all my gear into the Vibe and headed to Will’s house. After getting his gear and Ana’s gear into the car we were off. We topped off the gas tank and jumped in I-80. We drove until 8:30 AM (CST) clearing just over 600 miles. We made a few stops for more gas and bathroom breaks along the way and to switch off myself and Will for driving. Our first stop is in Scranton, PA. We rented a hotel room for a few hours to rest up and to shower. After that we will be off to New York!
